Overview

First Street Foundation is a non-profit research and technology organization committed to defining America's past, present and future flood risk. To do that, we have created two public-facing tools that highlight the risks, causes, and solutions to flooding and are about to launch a flood data API.

+ FloodiQ.com a big data, property-level flood risk tool, which visualizes risk of flooding today and up to 15 years in the future as sea levels rise

+ Sealevelrise.org a simple but digitally-rich educational site that explains sea level rise and flooding, that is tailored to a state-specific level

Mission of Role

We pride ourselves on being able to simplify complex ideas, data, and science and are looking to expand our team with a Senior Data Visualization Designer. We are looking for a creative and analytical person who is passionate about the environment and wants to join our group.


The Senior Data Visualization Designer will be responsible for the expansion of rich interactive graphics, data visualizations and charting, designing, developing and supporting interactive data visualizations used across the enterprise including First Street Foundation's tools (Flood iQ), partnerships, research publications (Summary Sheets), presentations, and marketing and communications campaigns. Candidates must possess creative and adaptive thinking skills, be resourceful, and have a passion for conveying complex scientific information and flood data, through engaging visuals.

Job Description

We're looking for someone who can clearly communicate scientific research and data to diverse audiences. The Senior Data Visualization Designer will identify the best opportunities to use data analysis, graphic design and/or programming expertise to visually depict research data accurately and in ways that are accessible, engaging, innovative, and relevant to target audiences. Some of the tasks of this role include:

Collaborate with the marketing and data teams and present recommendations on how to strategically solve problems and convey key messages using data visualization

Develop intuitive and attractive static and interactive data visualizations

Interpret and produce unique data visualizations for a variety of implementations, including reports, public-facing tools, presentations and peer reviewed research

Distill quantitative and qualitative data to communicate compelling stories to diverse audiences

Establish data visualization standards

Support the design team in presentation, marketing, site and product design

Qualifications

Must Have:

  • Degree in information computation design, computer and information sciences, graphic design, basic statistics, data visualization, media arts and sciences, or equivalent with 6 - 8 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of graphics and visualization tools such as Adobe CS 5 Suite including Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Flash, Tableau, etc
  • Demonstrated ability to take complex information or large data sets and translate them for use in graphic or interactive visualizations for the web or other media
  • Experience with data analysis and data visualization using tools such as SAS, Excel, SPSS, MatLab/R
  • Familiarity with current web standards-based HTML, CSS and interactive tools such as JQuery or other Javascript-based code libraries
